US July 2025 tariff order set a 15% additional rate for Nigeria
A US executive order dated 31 July 2025 assigned Nigeria a 15% reciprocal tariff rate, subject to exceptions. The episode highlighted the importance of product classifications and market diversification for Nigerian exporters.

What the July order changed
The United States listed Nigeria at a 15% additional reciprocal tariff rate in an executive order issued on 31 July 2025. US Customs and Border Protection subsequently specified 7 August 2025 as the effective date for the revised rates, with exceptions and separate treatment for qualifying goods already in transit.
The headline percentage did not describe every Nigerian shipment. Product exclusions, customs classifications and other applicable duties mattered when calculating the actual charge.
Why Nigerian businesses should care
For an exporter negotiating a dollar contract, an additional import duty can change the American buyer's landed cost and bargaining position. A business may face pressure to reduce its price, accept a smaller margin or seek alternative customers. These are possible commercial effects, rather than evidence that every exporter suffered the same outcome.
The episode also illustrates why exchange rates alone cannot establish export competitiveness. Freight, insurance, documentation and destination-country taxes belong in the same calculation. This report records the July 2025 announcement; it does not present that historic tariff schedule as today's customs advice.
