How these estimates are produced+

Buying and selling estimates are calculated separately as the median of eligible, source-reported dealer quotes. A single available source is labelled as such; repeated reports from one publisher are not counted as independent sources. These are not official CBN rates and cannot establish the price of an individual transaction.

A collection check does not make an old source quote new. Source update time and collection time are shown separately. Unavailable, outlying or expired reports may be excluded; a failed check never creates a new price or overwrites a valid record.

Before using a quote

Parallel market questions, answered.

What is the black market or parallel market rate?

Here, the terms describe unofficial, source-reported foreign-currency quotes outside the CBN official reference series. FXRates presents indicative estimates, not a price at which it offers to buy or sell currency.

What do buying and selling mean?

The labels use the dealer’s perspective. The buying estimate is what a dealer reportedly pays when you sell foreign currency. The selling estimate is what a dealer reportedly charges when you buy foreign currency with Naira.

Why can reported rates differ?

Reports can refer to different times, locations, amounts and transaction conditions. Availability and negotiated spreads may also differ. A median summarises eligible reports; it does not make every transaction available at that price.

Is this the same as the official CBN exchange rate?

No. Official CBN buying, central and selling values are a separate daily reference series. They are labelled independently on FXRates and are not mixed into the parallel-market estimate.

How often does this page update?

The visible page checks the stored feed every minute. Source collection runs separately and the publishers may update at different times. The displayed source timestamp, not the time of a page check, identifies the age of a reported price.

Why is a quote stale or unavailable?

An older accepted report may be retained with a stale label when fresh reports are unavailable. Reports that fail freshness or validation rules are excluded. A missing rate is not replaced with an invented estimate.

Where is the previous year of historical data?

The chart contains only stored observations and verified source archives. If a complete year cannot be verified, that period is marked as unavailable. Collection begins with real accepted records, rather than a simulated historical trend.

Will I receive the amount shown by the calculator?

Not necessarily. The calculator multiplies or divides the displayed indicative estimate. Fees, availability, the amount exchanged and a dealer’s actual spread can change the final transaction value.
