Nigeria opened its 2025 oil and gas licensing round for 50 blocks
Nigeria's 2025 licensing round opened on 1 December with 50 oil and gas blocks available. The programme sought new investment and production capacity, but licences and exploration activity do not immediately translate into export earnings.

The December 2025 opening
Nigeria's 2025 oil and gas licensing round opened on 1 December 2025. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission later confirmed that date and said 50 blocks were available to investors. This archival report records the opening rather than a new invitation to bid.
At a pre-bid webinar on 3 February 2026, the regulator said licensing materials had been available on its dedicated portal since the December launch.
How the process was structured
The NUPRC described stages covering registration and pre-qualification, data acquisition, technical bids, evaluation and a commercial bid conference. Its published guidelines set out objectives including expanding reserves, increasing production capacity and developing gas resources under the Petroleum Industry Act framework.
Possible relevance for the naira
Successful investment could eventually support production, export receipts and government revenue. That transmission takes time: an acreage award is followed by financing, technical work and project execution, with geological and commercial risks along the way.
Readers should therefore distinguish the licensing milestone from actual barrels produced or dollars received. Neither the number of blocks offered nor official ambitions establish a near-term exchange-rate outcome.
